Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What To Expect

Upon arriving at the clinic, you will be provided with a pair of slippers and scrubs that are 100% cotton. A changing room is available near the chamber area.

Before each session, your chamber technician will check your vital signs and check your ears. If you are diabetic, they will also check your blood sugar. It is important to use the restroom before entering the chamber.

For your safety, no personal items are allowed into the chamber. You will also need to remove hair and skin care products. Your health care team will provide education on specific restrictions at your first visit and will review a safety checklist before you are placed in the chamber. (See link to safety checklist below.)

You will lie down on a stretcher that slides into the chamber. Each chamber is a roomy cylinder made completely of clear acrylic, so you will be able to see out for the duration of the treatment. You will also be able to see your technician, and your technician will be able to see you. You can also speak with your technician while you are inside the chamber. Each chamber has its own TV to watch your favorite shows/movies or listen to music.

Once treatment is initiated, the oxygen pressure is increased 2 to 3 times higher than normal atmospheric pressure. This will allow your lungs to gather more oxygen than it would be possible by breathing normal air. During therapy, the increased pressure will create a temporary feeling of fullness in your ears, similar to reaching high altitudes while flying on a plane. This pressure can be relieved by swallowing or yawning. Your technician will assist you with clearing this pressure.

Each treatment will last between 60-120 minutes, The number of sessions depends on your diagnosis. This will be determined by the doctor at your initial visit. Some minor conditions might be treated in 5-10 visits, while others may require 20-40 treatments.

In order for HBOT to be effective, you MUST be consistent in completing the recommended days and number of ordered treatments. In addition, HBOT is usually a multi-part treatment plan, which may include other therapies, medications, and doctor visits.

Once your session is complete, your chamber technician will check your vital signs and check your ears. If you are diabetic, they will also check your blood sugar. Then you will be able to change into your regular clothing and go home.

Please do NOT smoke within 2 hours before or after your session. This will decrease the body's ability to effectively absorb the oxygen.
